Amendment

A return filed to correct a prior year's tax return is known as an amended return. Errors can be fixed, and a more favorable tax filing can be claimed with an amended return. For instance, in cases of misreported earnings or tax credits, one may decide to file an amended return. People file amended returns for a variety of reasons, including changes to their filing status, adjustments to the number of dependents they claim, incorrectly claimed tax credits and deductions, and inaccurately reported income. The inconvenience of filing an amended return is that it requires up to 16 weeks for processing, and it must be mailed to the IRS Service Center that handled the original tax form.
